‘With this work, we have shown that melatonin activates cellular antiviral defence processes that the herpesvirus inhibits,’ says Ana Coto, lecturer in the Department of Morphology and Cell Biology at the University of Oviedo.
A study conducted by researchers from the University of Oviedo and the Central University Hospital of Asturias (HUCA) reveals that melatonin helps control herpes virus type 1 replication.
The study, which focuses on herpes virus type 1, which causes several diseases, states that there are antiviral drugs that can successfully treat this virus.
The study paves the way for managing the infection through the use of certain compounds that, while not strictly antiviral, can help control the infection without the drawbacks of antiviral resistance.
